গঙ্গা জুয়ারির ডেস্ক থেকে
আজ স্বাধীনতা দিবস। আজ সবাই একটু থমকে দাঁড়িয়ে পেছন ফিরে দেখবে কতটা রাস্তা পেরোলাম, কি ভাবে পেরোলাম, কোথায় এসে দাঁড়িয়েছি, সামনে 2 Roads এর মতো যে রাস্তারা পড়ে আছে আলাদা আলাদা সম্ভাবনা নিয়ে তার কোনটায় আমি যাবো, অন্যেরা কোন রাস্তা নেবে ?
স্বাধীনতার ধারণাটা শুরুর থেকেই বেশ গোলমেলে।লোকেরা নিজের মতো করেই তা বোঝে। 1857 র যুদ্ধটাকে ভারতীয়রা বলবে সিপাহী বিদ্রোহ, বৃটিশরা বলবে টেররিজম, বিশ শতকের প্রথমার্ধের দাবানলকে ভারতীয়রা বলবে স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রাম, বৃটিশরা বলবে অ্যানার্কি। তারপর1947 এর পর যখন বৃটিশরা চলে গেছে, প্রতিপক্ষ চিনিয়ে দেবার জার্সিটা আর নেই, তখন আবার স্বাধীনতার ধারণাটার অন্য চেহারা। প্রতিপক্ষ চেনাটাই এক বড় সমস্যা। চিনে, ফল-বন্টনের টানাপোড়েন। সবাই গণতন্ত্রের মুখোশ এঁটে। এখনকার ধারণা হয়তো আবার পাল্টে গেছে।
স্বাধীনতা আর গনতন্ত্র একসাথে গাঁটছড়া বেঁধে আছে। স্বাধীনতার আগে পরাধীনতা। কোনো বিদেশী রাজপাটের নীচে থাকা। কলোনিয়াল রাজদন্ডের শোষন। সম্পদ সব পাচার হচ্ছে ইউরোপের রাজকোষে। বেশীটাই এশিয়া, আফ্রিকা আর সাউথ আমেরিকার ভূখণ্ড থেকে। এবং আমেরিকা। স্বাধীনতার তখনকার মানে, বিদেশী শাষন ভাগাও, দেশের সম্পদ দেশেই থাকুক।
তা এলো সেই ম্যাজিক মেটাফর, স্বাধীনতা। গোটা বিশ্ব জুড়েই এলো। প্রথমে আমেরিকায়, সেটা 1776। তারপর গত 75 -100 বছরে পৃথিবীর বাকি জায়গায়। বিদেশীরা গেলো চলে, সম্পদ থাকতে লাগলো দেশেই।
তা না হয় হলো কিন্তু সেই সম্পদের বাঁটোয়ারা এখন কি করে হবে? কে করবে সেই বাঁটোয়ারা? সেটা ঠিক করতে এলো গণতন্ত্র। আগে সম্রাটদের জমানায় সম্রাটের হুকুমই তন্ত্র ছিলো। কিন্তু তার মধ্যেই কিছু লোকের মনে গণতন্ত্রের রুপরেখাটা এলো। আলেকজান্ডার যখন দুনিয়া পদানত করে বেড়াচ্ছেন তার বিশ্বজয়ী অভিযানে, সেই সময়ে এথেন্সে বসে তারই রাজ্যের লোক প্লাটো লিখে ফেললেন The Republic.
এখন সেই সম্পদ বাঁটোয়ারায় বড় ঘোলা জল। স্বাধীনতা আর গনতন্ত্রের আড়ে একদলের আগ্নেয়গিরির শিখরে উল্লাসের পিকনিক। অন্যদলের ভষ্মিভূত হওয়া জ্বলন্ত গহ্বরে। মতধারার ক্রমাগত বিবর্তন। কিন্তু বিবর্তনের অভিমুখ যাই হোক, তার কেন্দ্রবিন্দুতে যেন থাকে বিশ্বকবির সেই চিরন্তনী চিন্তাধারা –
চিত্ত যেথা ভয় শুন্য উচ্চ যেথা শির।
আমরা সবাই চাইবো ভারতকে সেই স্বর্গে উপনিত করতে।

Today is Independence Day. Today all will pause a bit, stare back with a cupped palm to cast a gaze on how much road we travelled, how we have travelled, where we have arrived now, out of the roads which lay ahead with different possibilities like in Two Roads (The Road Not Taken), which one I will prefer, which others will prefer ?
The idea of Independence is quite bi-polar since beginning. People interpret it in their own way. The Delhi war of 1857 will be eulogised as war of independence by Indians, but mutiny to British. The firey turbulence of the 1st half of 20th century is freedom struggle to Indians, but anarchy to British. Then after 1947, when British left and the jersey to identify the enemy was no more available, the perception of independence took a different avtar. The idea of Independence itself was in challenge. Agenda then gradually shifted to identify the new adversary. And on spotting, engage into a skirmish for sharing the spill. All these were enacted with their masks of Democracy, snugly fitted. The concept now might had evolved again to some different outline.
Independence and democracy generally walked together. Subjugation preceds independence. Subjugation to some monarchy at a far away place. Exploitation of a colonial eco-system. Wealth is drained to some European treasury. Mostly from the vast swathes of landmass of Asia, Africa and South America. And of America. Then the idea of independence was limited to drive away the ruling outsiders, stop the wealth drain, let our wealth remain with us.
All such struggle and revolutions ultimately brought that magic metaphor – independence. It emerged throughout the entire world. First in America, it was 1776. Afterwards, in last 75 – 100 years, to rest of the world. Colonial rulers wound up their empire. Country’s wealth remained in the country.
Well, wealth-drain issue now been settled, the challenge confronted the new independent dispensations is – how to distribute this retained wealth, or fruits thereof, among own populace ? And who will control such distribution ? To address that area, emerged Democracy. Rule of People. In earlier times of empires and kingdoms, the wish of emperor, monarch or king was the Rule. People’s say was nearly non-existant. Even then, some had thought of an outline of People’s rule. When Alexander was busy subjugating the entire known world, sitting at Athens and probably getting benefitted from such war spoils, Plato wrote The Republic.
Now, that distribution process has become a cesspool. In the umbrage of independence and democracy, one group is frolicking wildly atop a sleeping volcano, while a vast other group is getting tormented at the hidden fire at it’s belly. Concept of Independence is again thrown open to the next step of its evolution. We are all participants in that process, either actively or merely by ‘Standing and Staring’ with our own takes on it. But whichever turn such evolution takes, we pray that, it will carry as it’s central theme, the immortal lines of Tagore –
Where the mind is without fear,
Head held high
We all wish to see our country, awakened to that heaven.
