এ’সব গল্প হলো আমার ছোটবেলার।
হয়ত ভুলে যাবারই কথা ছিল। কিন্তু সম্প্রতি একটি ঘটনায় অদ্ভুতভাবে সেই বাল্যের পরিচিতি ‘রতন’ বা আবার ফিরে এলো। বোধ হয়।
বস্তুতঃ, সে-গল্প করতেই তো বসেছি আজ কলম হাতে।
চাকুরি করি ‘এন্থ্রোপোলজিকাল সার্ভে অব্ ইন্ডিয়া’-তে।
ছাত্রাবস্থায় আমার গবেষণার বিষয় ছিল ‘চুহ্ড়া’ জনজাতির উপরে, বিশেষত, অ-হিন্দু চুহ্ড়াদের উপরে, যারা সাম্যের টানে ইসলাম-ঈশাই-শিখ ধর্মকে আপনেছিলেন, কিন্তু সমাজের সেই নিচুর নিচু, নিচুতম, স্থান থেকে উঠে আসতে পারেননি আজও। এঁরা এখনও ধাঙ্গড়ের কাজ করেন ও সাফ করেন মনুষ্য মলমূত্র। হিন্দু চুহ্রাদের বেশিরভাগের পদবী হয় ‘বাল্মিকী’ ।
এক আন্তর্জাতিক সেমিনারে কুয়েত গিয়েছিলাম গত বছর।
সেখানে আলাপ হয় মরিশাসের ভারতীয় বংশোদ্ভূতা অধ্যাপিকা শাহিমা নূরের সঙ্গে। এঁর পূর্বপুরুষরা উত্তর বিহারের চম্পারণ অঞ্চল থেকে মরিশাসের ইক্ষুক্ষেতের মজুর হয়ে গিয়েছিলেন একশ-দেড়শ বছর আগে, শুনলাম। ওঁর স্পেশালাইজশনের বিষয় হচ্ছে ‘দলিত সাহিত্য’, বিশেষত, দলিত মহিলা-সাহিত্য।
কাছেই ‘উর’ শহরে একটা ডে-ট্রিপ করে আসবার প্ল্যানটা উনিই দেন (হয়ত ট্যাক্সিভাড়া ভাগ হয়ে যাবার সুবিধার জন্যে)।
‘কী বিশেষত্ব এই উর শহরের?’ শুধাই।
আমার এই সামান্য প্রশ্ন শুনে দীর্ঘ এক বক্তৃতা দিয়ে ফেললেন উনি এই প্রাচীন সুমেরীয় শহরের উপরে, তবে তার মধ্যে বিশেষ উল্লেখযোগ্য হল, বিশ্বের প্রাচীনতম কবি শ্রীমতি এনেদুয়ানা-র জন্মকর্ম এই উর শহরেই হয়েছিল খৃষ্টদেব জন্মানোর প্রায় আড়াই হাজার বছর আগে। বললেন প্রফেসর নূর।
‘বিশ্বের প্রাচীনতম কবি উনি? আমাদের মহাকবি বাল্মিকী নন, যিনি রামায়ণ গান গেয়েছিলেন? তাঁকেই তো আদিকবি বলা হয়। ‘ আমার প্রশ্ন।
সেটা এড়িয়ে গিয়ে শ্রীমতি নূর বললেন, “কবি শ্রীমতি এনেদুয়ানা রাজকন্যে হলেও উচ্চবংশজাতা ছিলেন না কিন্তু, কারণ তাঁর পিতা প্রথম আক্কাদীয় সম্রাট সারগোঁ আদতে ছিলেন একজন মালী।”
বেশ।
জ্ঞানবৃদ্ধি হলো আমার।

আমাদের উর শহর ভ্রমণ ছিল গতানুগতিক এবং আজকের গল্পের জন্য অপ্রাসঙ্গিক, তাই সে-বিষয়ে লিখছি না কিছু, কিন্তু অধ্যাপিকার সঙ্গে আমার সম্পর্কটি রয়ে গেল ই-মেইলের মাধ্যমে।
এই প্রোফ. নূর-ই কয়েকদিন আগে ব্যাপক উত্তেজিত হয়ে একটি মেইল করেছিলেন আমায়,
“টু ড. রামকুমার খানঃ
বাল্মিকী রিজার্ভ ফরেস্টটা ভারতবর্ষের ঠিক কোথায় বলুন তো? আমি শীঘ্র একবার সেখানে যেতে চাই!”
আসতে চান? শীঘ্রই? কেন? এমন কী হল হঠাৎ?
‘আপনার মনে কি প্রশ্ন জাগে না, ড. খান, খৃষ্টদেব জন্মানোর দু-আড়াই হাজার বছর আগে উত্তর চম্পারণের এক জঙ্গলাকীর্ণ স্থানে বসে ঋষি বাল্মিকী কী করে ভারতবর্ষের ভূগোলটা জানলেন? অযোধ্যা না হয় বেশি দূরে নয়, কিন্তু বিন্ধ্য পর্বত, গোদাবরী নদী ও অরণ্য তথা সুদূর লঙ্কা দেশের বর্ণনা ওঁর কাব্যে এতো নিখুঁতভাবে প্রতিফলিত হলো কী ভাবে?’
অধ্যাপিকার নূরের প্রশ্ন।
ঠিকই তো!
এ’দিকটা তো ভেবে দেখিনি কোনদিন ।
‘জানেন, ড. খান, এক সাম্প্রতিক গবেষণাপত্রে লিখেছে যে আড়াই হাজার খৃষ্টপূর্বাব্দে মাটির ফলকের উপরে প্রাচীন মিশরীয় হায়রাটিক লিপিতে লেখা এক ভগ্ন-জাহাজের নাবিকের কাব্যের একটা অংশ বা কপি নাকি ভারতের বাল্মিকী ফরেস্টের কাছে এক গুহায় প্রোথিত হয়ে আছে? আমি সেটা খুঁজতেই ভারতে আসতে চাই।’

These are all my teenage stories, might well have been forgotten. But a recent incident had rekindled that memory once again.My job is with Anthropological Survey of India. During my student days, my research was on Chuhra tribes. They, in the hope securing some social equity, had left Hinduism and embraced Islam, Christianity or Sikhism. But even after that, their dream of some social egalitarian order remained elusive. They still lie at the bottom of social hierarchy. They are engaged in cleaning of human solid waste. Most of the Hindu Chuhras carry a surname of Balmiki.I was attending an international seminar at Kuwait last year. There I met Prof. Shahima Noor. She came from Mauritius. But she had an Indian descent. Several generations ago, her forefathers had come to Mauritius from Champaran of north Bihar. They came to work in suger plantations. That was about 150 years ago – she told. Her domain of specialisation was Dalit Literature, especially those created by women.In between the hectic schedule of seminar, there was a day off during which we made a day trip to a nearby place called Ur. That was an ancient Sumerian place. She was at her eloquent best to be in her own domain. She narrated many history of Ur. She said that world’s oldest woman poet Eneduana was from this place. And that was in around 2500 BC.I expressed my wonder. Was she the oldest poet ? Was it not Balmiki who was the creater of Ramayana ? He is generally known as Adi Kavi (First Poet) !She brushed aside my question and continued with her elucidation of the Sumerian poetess – Though she was a princess, she did not belong to any high social order. Her father, 1st Akkadian king Sargon, was originally a gardener.This tour and the seminar had ended with usual paraphernalia. We had returned to our own countries.But now, a few days back, the Professer had sent me a mail in her height of excitement : Mr. Khan, pl. tell me the exact location, in India, of Balmiki Reserve Forest, Champaran. I want to visit that place.
– Why ? I could not hold back my surprise.
– Had it never occured to your mind to think that in around 2000 – 2500 BC, sitting in a forest at Champaran, how poet Balmiki would know the geography of the vast Indian peninsula? Ayodhya (Ram’s birthplace) may be somewhat nearby to his place and he might have visited it before writing the minute details of the place in his book. But how about Vindhya Hills, river Godavari and its forests and distant land of Srilanka? How those places had been described by the poet so accurately ? He must not have travelled to these places beforehand as an input to his future writings !Now it was my turn to be bewildered : Well, never thought on those lines !She further added – You know, it appeared in a recent research paper that an earthern tablet, with a verse written on it in ancient Egyptian Hieratic is lying in a cave in that Balmiki forest of Champaran.
I want to trace it and see that.- Good Heavens ! I exclaimed to myself.
