Topic: India and Her Neighbourhood

By Prof. Rahul Tripathi, Head Dept of Political Science, Goa University

Abstract of the Talk

India faces a very complex neighbourhood. On one hand, natural ties of history, geography, culture and religion binds us together in a large number commonalities that the region exhibits. On the other hand, the same legacy and its post colonial nation building trajectory has led to unsettled borders, and populations, history of conflicts, mutual suspicion. In this context, India’s asymmetric size in the neighbourhood has further compounded the problems. The numerous steps taken in the past such as Gujral doctrine, Connected South Asia, Neighbourhood first etc have not yielded appropriate results. The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) has faltered.

The present talk shall try to understand this complexity and the reasons therein and gives some suggestions on moving ahead with our neighbourhood. It underscores the importance of our immediate neighbourhood as a pre-requisite to India’s aspiration to be a global power.
