Yesterday’s Women’s day too turned syrupy with praise, platitudes and poetry dedicated to women.
Such a heady mix every year turns the environment too intoxicated for women to think clearly on
the assigned date. However, for the rest of the year, here is some material for them and the menfolk
to think over.
A brief summary is this. The humanity, once scared of population explosion is now looking at
population decline in most geographical areas with rise in a few. That would lead to population
imbalance. The women wielding the nature ordained capacity to give birth to future citizens are,
knowingly or unknowingly, refusing the ‘glory’ of motherhood in the developed world. That act of
omission is inexorably pushing those nationalities to the brink of oblivion.
Contours of the problem: A population remains constant only if the fertility per woman stays at 2.1
(total fertility rate). The above figure from the UN database shows that in 2015 itself, most parts of
the world was having the TFR much below 2.1.
The neglect of women’s career: Almost all organised religions bar women from rising anywhere near
the top of hierarchy. Has anyone heard of a woman pope, moulavi or Shankaracharya? On the other
hand, despite their emotional outbursts on gender equality or rights of women, presence of the fair
sex is low at the top echelons of the democratic, liberal or socialist organisations, even in the
communist parties. For example, the Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party never
had a woman member since its inception. Women’s participation in the Central Committee or the
Politburo from 2002 to date hovered near the dismal figure of 4%.
Surprisingly, located on the opposite pole of the communists, in the corporate boards in Japan
women constitute only about 4% (note the uncanny similarity with the Chinese Communists). Such
deprivation of the women across geographical and ideological spectrum drives one to wonder- are
the women capable? Do they carry intrinsic traits that damage their progress?
An endless list of successful women from all occupations returns a firm affirmative to the first
question. Unfortunately, for the second question too the answer is in the affirmative.
The major issues are these.
i. The women shying away from child bearing due to stress and loss of career.
ii. The mistaken belief that women can be equal to men. Even the feminists have fallen into this trap.
All, especially the women, need to tear off the ‘responsibilty’ tag and realise that bearing and rearing
young men and women is a social work that deserves reward. Showering sympathy with words like
‘Don’t give her work’ and silently side lining them in career or promotions is a harmful activity
against the country and the society.
For eons now, a typical male has become used to placing a baby on his wife’s lap, asking her to keep
the food ready and going out to enjoy the world at large. He fails to notice the looming spectre of
existential crisis building up behind his back. The fact is, the enlightened women of the advanced
countries (and also of the advanced states in India) are refusing to breed. On the other side,
population is growing in the countries where the women are deprived of education or the family
planning facilities or both.
Contrary to the much prevalent idea of religious influence, the above issue of population imbalance
in global scale (and also in India) seems more attributable to women’s education. For instance,
Bangladesh has arrested its population growth, Kashmir is growing slower than Bihar, Iran is
shrinking while the co-religionists of desperately shrinking Italy and Spain are registering unbridled
growth in sub-Saharan Africa.
The educated women are no more willing to think much about the ‘imbalance’ problem precisely
because the ready solution would affect their physical and professional well-being. On the other
hand, the poor, uneducated women do not have the resources to do so. Thus, the onus of finding an
effective solution to ‘rebalance’ has fallen on the menfolk.
The second issue of mistaken ‘equality’ is internal to women. It is high time for them to realise that
they are not equal to men. Surrendering one’s uniqueness while trying to be others is a great
blunder. Women should clearly say, ‘We are not equal to men. We are different, so is our path of
growth.’ It would be good if men understand the fundamental truth in such utterings. If they do not,
women may remain silent. More often than not, silence is a tough argument to refute.

*মেয়েদের দিন, ২০২১*
বিশ্ব মহিলা দিবসে মেয়েদের প্রশংসাভরা গান ও কবিতাবর্ষণ শুরু হয়েছে। শরবতে সাঁতার দিতে দিতে ঠান্ডা মাথায় চিন্তা করা অসম্ভব। তাই আজ থাক। কাল থেকে মেয়েরা চিন্তা করুন, তাঁদের বাস্তব অবস্থাটা কি?
প্রায় কোন সংগঠিত ধর্মেই মেয়েরা ধর্তব্যের মত দায়িত্বশীল জায়গায় নেই। কাঞ্চিতে কোন জগদ্গুরুমা বসেন নি, কোন মৌলানা মহিলা দেখেছেন? অথবা মহিলা পোপ?
যাঁরা নারী-পুরুষের সমানাধিকারের কথা বলতে গিয়ে আবেগে কাঁপতে থাকেন সেই উদারবাদী, গণতান্ত্রিক এমন কি কম্যুনিস্ট পার্টির উচ্চমার্গে সংখ্যার অনুপাতে মেয়েদের উপস্হিতি নামমাত্র। ২০০২ থেকে ২০১৭ অব্দি চীনের কম্যুনিস্ট পার্টির কেন্দ্রীয় কমিটি বা পলিটব্যুরো তে মেয়েদের উপস্হিতি খুব বেশী হলে ৪%। আর তাদের দন্ডায়মান গোষ্ঠীতে (স্ট্যান্ডিং কমিটি) এ পর্যন্ত, বোধ হয় কষ্ট হবে বলেই, কোন মহিলাকে নেওয়া হয় নি।
আশ্চর্যজনকভাবে, কম্যুনিস্টদের বিপরীত মেরুতে আসীন পুঁজিবাদী বড় বড় কোম্পানির উচ্চকোটিতেও ছবিটা এক রকম। উদাহরণ -বছরখানেক আগে জাপানের কর্পোরেট বোর্ডে মহিলাদের উপস্হিতি ছিল প্রায় ৪% (চীনা পার্টির কেন্দ্রীয় কমিটির সাথে অবাক করা মিলটা লক্ষ্য করুন )।
এত দিন ধরে বিবিধ পরিসর ও পরিস্থিতিতে এরকমটা ঘটে যাচ্ছে…ঘটতেই থাকছে কেন?
মেয়েদের ভিতরে সত্যিই কোন গলদ আছে কি?
আমার ধারণা, আছে। যেমন,
১। মেয়েরা মেনে নিয়েছেন, সন্তান ধারণ করা শুধু নয় তাদের পালন-পোষণ তাঁদেরই দায়িত্ব।এই ভুলটি কাটিয়ে উঠে বুঝতে হবে যে প্রচুর শারীরিক ঝুঁকি নিয়েভবিষ্যতের নাগরিকদের জন্ম দেওয়া একটি সমাজ বা দেশসেবার কাজ। সেটি যে-ই করুন না কেন, তাঁর প্রাপ্য পুরষ্কার। ‘ওকে কাজ দিও না’ বলে পেশা এবং পদোন্নতির ক্ষেত্র থেকে তাঁদের দূরে ঠেলে দেওয়াটি একটি দেশ ও সমাজবিরোধী কাজ।
২। মেয়েরা বিশ্বাস করছেন, তাঁরা পুরুষের সমান। এটি একটি পুরুষমুখী ফাঁদ।
প্রথম সমস্যা: বহুদিন ধরে সর্বস্তরে মেয়েদের কোলে বাচ্চা ধরিয়ে ‘তুমি রান্নাটা করে নিয়ে সিরিয়াল দেখো’ বলে পু্রুষ বহির্জগতের মজা আহরণ করতে বেরিয়ে পড়তে পড়তে খেয়াল করে নি যে, পিছনে একটি ভয়ংকর অস্তিত্বের সংকট ঘনিয়ে উঠছে। এই কারণেই শিক্ষার আলো পাওয়া সমস্ত প্রথম বিশ্বের মেয়েরা আর সন্তানের জন্ম দিতে ইচ্ছুক নয়। পদ্য লিখে আর গাড়ির দরজা খুলে শিভ্যালরি দেখানো পুরুষতান্ত্রিক সমাজের এখন বংশরক্ষা নিয়ে টানাটানি। উল্টোদিকে মে সব মেয়েরা শিক্ষার আলো পায় নি তাদের দিয়ে দেদার সন্তান উৎপাদন চলছে। জনসংখ্যার এই ভারসাম্যহীনতার সাথে ধর্মের চেয়ে শিক্ষা-অশিক্ষার প্রভাব বেশী বলে মনে হয়। কারণ বাংলাদেশে লোক বাড়া স্হগিত হয়ে গেছে, ইরানে কমছে, কাশ্মীরের জনসংখ্যাবৃদ্ধির হার বিহারের চেয়ে কম আর সাহারার নীচে তৃতীয় একটি ধর্মের লোক বেড়েই চলেছে।
এ ব্যাপারে মেয়েরা, বিশেষতঃ, শিক্ষিত মেয়েরা বোধহয় আর চিন্তা করবেন না; আর যাঁদের পড়তেই দেওয়া হয় না তাঁরা ভাববেন কি করে? পুরুষদেরই তাঁদের জনগোষ্ঠীর বিলোপ বা অতিবৃদ্ধি ঠেকানোর ব্যাপারে ভাবতে হবে।
দ্বিতীয় সমস্যা: এটি মেয়েদের অন্তর্লীন বিষয়। পরিষ্কার ভাবে বুঝতে হবে, তাঁরা পুরুষের সমান নন, সেরকমটা হতে গিয়ে নিজেকে খুইয়ে ফেলা একটি বিশাল ভুল। তাঁদের বলতে হবে, ‘তোমার মতো একরকম নই’, আমি আমার মতো- অন্যরকম, বিশেষরকম।
এই উক্তিটি পুরুষ শুনতে চাইলে এবং শুনে তার গভীরতা ও তাৎপর্য হৃদয়ঙ্গম করতে পারলে ভালো, না হলে মেয়েরা হয়তো চুপ করে থাকবেন আর জনসংখ্যার সঙ্কট বাড়তেই থাকবে।
নীরবতা কখনো কখনো অতি শক্তিশালীর পথরোধ করে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকে।।
